Chatsworth Reservoir Area

The east side of the reservoir

Wildlife can be found her,but not in abundance. From the 50's to the 90's  nuclear tests were carried out at the Rocketdyne Plant only a few hundred yards from here. The plant was the site of at least 9 known nuclear accidents. I have seen deer and several coyotes in this area, none with two heads yet,but the coyotes are a mangy looking motley crew. This fellow seems to be unaffected. However, workers at the rocketdyne plant have said they saw many two-headed snakes, deformed tadpoles, and scroungy looking deer with open sores when they worked there.

As you may have gathered by looking at these photographs, the Chatsworth Reservoir does not exactly hold a lot of water. I do not believe engineers have as much faith in earthen dams as they once did....not to mention the reservoir may be contaminated by the 9 nuclear accidents that happened at Rocketdyne right next door including a partial nuclear meltdown in 1959 that reportedly released  over 240 times the radiation of the Three Mile Island incident in 1979. The wind was blowing this direction when the meltdown occurred. They may not want to flood this contaminated area and spread the radioactive material not to mention other contaminants such as rocket fuel which are in the ground water. This area is home to the worst nuclear accident site on U.S. soil - welcome to Los Angeles! Near the bottom of this page is a  link with more information on the environmental problems.

This is whats left of the Calera Kiln, used by Indians to burn limestone to make lime for mortar, bricks, and whitewash probably for nearby San Fernando Mission. Its located at the North Eastern end of the reservoir. Some people are very sentimental about it saying the city should erect a new lean to to protect the priceless kiln. Considering the problems of nuclear and chemical pollution in the area,I think its a non issue.

When you are driving around the perimeter of the reservoir looking in,the reservoir does not seem all that big,but when you get out and walk to certain points you can see the enormity of its enormous entirety - from this vantage point looking Southeast from about 80% of its length.
