Woodley/Balboa Park and Sepulveda Dam and Wildlife Area
The Balboa and Woodley Park and Sepulveda Dam and Wildlife Area compose an area roughly a little over two miles by one and a half miles with one section almost three miles wide. As a young boy,I was harassed by perverted old men in these areas. Believe it or not,in the area just to the left of this photo a completely naked man offered me money to come down from the top of dam.... at the time I was not sure if I should be scared or laugh.I was also approached once by undocumented Hispanic men who worked the cornfields and offered money to come inside the truck trailers they lived in. I laugh about it now because even as an older teen,my father would not allow me to do things like go to a rollings stones concert even with people from our church because someone told him that I may see women's exposed breasts there (and he did not want me going to the beach for the same reason) but meanwhile men were chasing me through the park to molest me - fortunately for me,they were unsuccessful.
He looks like a lone sentinel guarding the castle.
The Encino Golf Course, which is the most beautifully landscaped of the three Golf Courses in the area also shown below. These golf courses are for the common folk meaning they do not require 100,000 dollar memberships.
These waters mix with treated affluent somewhere in this vast park. These waters contain fish, some I have seen over three feet long that appear to be catfish, but I have seen smaller fish that seem to be related to gold fish or Koi. Fortunately for the fish, the waters are a little murky which helps them hide from the many predators including the occasional transient and/or illegal alien. I have seen brown birds here with wingspans from six to eight feet, but that was many years ago but many other birds such as hawks fish here.
Over the years, the sediment has built up. I am not sure, but perhaps the sediment and plants help remove toxins and fertilizers before they are released to the ocean which may help reduce algae blooms. Or maybe the city is just saving money by not cleaning them out,but whatever the reason, wildlife does flourish here.
