Van Nuys Airport

The control tower, dedicated in 1968. Van Nuys Airport is the biggest general aviation airport in the world with an 8,000 foot runway, I believe the photo below is the original tower, but I am not certain.  At the bottom of this page,I have links to other sights about Van Nuys Airport.

The air operations for the fire department and police are located side by side. This Sikorsky Skycrane is leased from Erickson Air- Crane. Its a beautiful machine kept in immaculate condition. They can pick up water on the go with the snorkel or with a hose vacuum in hover mode as shown below.

Practicing with the hoist harness - the helicopter below smelled of fresh donuts for some reason

When the wind starts blowing,Los Angeles leases these Canadair water bombers from French Quebec. The day I was there the pilots were all on alert eating donuts and speaking French.
These aircraft originally came with piston engines but are now manufactured with jet turbine engines. During the Malibu fires, these aircraft picked up water directly from the ocean.

94th Aero Squadron Restaurant - thats what I call a REAL hole in the wall joint! Great food, right on the runway nice outdoor and indoor bar, fireplaces - shown below too. It looks like a World War One airfield in France - except for the Jeep.

An unusual visitor to Van Nuys Airport - an F-18 Super Hornet

Boeing BBJ (Boeing Business Jet)

The Condor Squadron - Cival Air Patrol. I believe they have lost some of their funding, because the planes are not as immaculate as they once were

Ex navy A-3 Sky Warriors now used to test electronics for Raytheon. The A-3 tail in the middle has strange protuberances, probably infra-red detectors. These aircraft are extremely noisy.

Inside the Airtel Plaza Hotel,Restaurant, and Bar. Great food, live entertainment in bar

The following photos were taken at the Van Nuys Airshow

A genuine Japanese Zero Fighter - flyable condition

"China Doll" C-46 cargo plane of World War 2

Northrop N9MB flying wing. The only one still flying - the Smithsonian has an N1 model on static display. All the big eight jet engined and four piston engined wings were scrapped.
